There are many ways to speed up your operating system. To throw all the old junk and that you don’t really need can make miracles.
No one likes a slow computer. It is of course quite obvious, but it looks like that this simple approaching has not reached to those who have decided the default configuration of Windows XP.
We are going to describes a number of useful tricks that increase system performance in some upcoming Computer and registry articles. It is definitely worthwhile to go through all of them methodically. But if you are looking for an immediate change, try our two quick tips:
1) First, take a look at startup programs, namely the programs that start automatically each time you restart your computer. Many of them insert a small icon in the taskbar at the bottom right of the screen. If there are a lot of icons, it is a sign that the Startup folder needs to be cleaned. How it works is explained in our step-by-step article. Restart the computer when you are finished. If you are lucky your computer already have been much faster.
2) If you are not happy with it, you can change the settings in your antivirus software so that it only looks for viruses when you ask for it and not when something retrieved from the disk. This means that there is constant virus checks. The search is carried out only when you ask for it. The situation is obviously less safe, but enormous resources. If you do searches regularly (daily), we believe that the increased risk is acceptable.
